| ''You don't think what you're saying is subjective? Clearly MANY people LOVED Memphis.'' Of course, picking a worst Best Musical is a subjective call. Count me among the ''MANY people who LOVED Memphis.'' I was blown away by Chad Kimball and Montego Glover's powerhouse performances that earned them multiple award nominations (and got Glover a tie for Best Actress in a Musical at the Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards). I also was knocked out by the energetic ensemble, Sergio Trujillo's ebullient choreography and Joe DiPietro and David Bryan's rousing and rockin' score that left audiences clapping along at its crowd-pleasing finale. Folks might've forgotten that ''Memphis'' had its champions in the press, too. Michael Kuchwara of the Associated Press raved: ''The exhilarating new musical shaking the Shubert Theatre is the very essence of what a Broadway musical should be.'' John Simon of Bloomberg News (no pushover) gushed: "I guarantee you a rambunctious good time, highlighted by rousing music and singing, spectacular dancing, and a witty, moving story.'' Besides winning the Tony for Best Musical, ''Memphis'' took the top prize from the Outer Critics and the Drama Desk Awards. When it played in London, ''Memphis'' picked up a couple of Olivier Awards, and the HDTV filming of it, was featured on PBS' ''Great Performances,'' earning an Emmy, If ''you didn't enjoy ['Memphis'] or connect with it or get moved by it,'' no problem. That's simply your subjective taste. But plenty of other folks did. It ran for nearly 1,200 performances, just shy of three years, outlasting all the other new shows of its season. |
