I meant to mention Thoroughly Modern Millie, which is strange since I was talking about it last night with a friend before I posted my reply here.
I think I'd rank it below Les Mis, Phantom and Sunset. Not sure about La Cage. I so hated the way Arthur Laurents directed the original production that I think the writing seemed worse than it is. The Millie production was generally well performed even if there were some production choices that I didn't like much. In case anyone is wondering, I saw both productions just a few days after they opened so it's not like I saw productions that had deteriorated.
OTOH, I saw Les Mis, Phantom and Sunset well after they had opened. Les Mis in particular I saw quite late in its original run, but the performances seemed mostly fine to excellent when I saw it. This was right after they had cut 15 minutes. |
