"Sunset is similar. If the score were just what's on the highlights CD it would be 2/3rds knock out of the park score mixed with some dud songs that bring it down. In performance of the full show, it becomes 50/50 at best because of the endless musical repetition and bad or lazy lyrics. But there's SO much that I think is good in this show (and so much that isn't too), and the story is great, the roles and actors they get for them are so juicy... it's not gonna make my worst list."

I would say that almost everything that's good about the show is contained in the huge sections of the original script that were retained for the musical, not to mention the basic story, which is so powerful, whereas very little of what was added for the musical in terms of the song or the script is any good. I don't know if that makes a difference to you in terms of your estimation of the musical as a whole, but it makes a big difference to me :-)
