***I wouldn't classify "Will Rogers" as among the worst of the winners, as its bouncy score, great leading man and typically inventive Tommy Tune staging made it a reasonably satisfying, splashy evening of Americana.***
This comment points up the fact that some people in this thread seem to be rating the musicals based on the writing alone, whereas others are rating them based on the productions, which probably accounts for even more disagreement than usual :-)
***But "Once on This Island" and "Miss Saigon" have already had Broadway revivals, and "The Secret Garden" has been mentioned for one. It's hard to imagine a Broadway revival of "The Will Rogers Follies" without Tune's original '91 production, which can still be seen in a taping done for Japanese TV.***
Exactly. But FWIW, I don't think the fact that MISS SAIGON got a Broadway revival proves anything (it seems to have been done mostly for ego, and it really wasn't a hit). I would rate that show as one of the worst-ever musicals to achieve a long run on Broadway. |
