and I would say with both "Grey Gardens" and "Song and Dance", you're really talking about two one-act musicals that have been stitched together because they share characters and tell a linked story, but also stand on their own (and with "Grey Gardens", I would love to see the show be just the second act, as most of the first is filler).
I entirely disagree about Grey Gardens - I enjoy how the fictionally-based Act I really sets up the real story in Act II. (Sort of a "how did you get there from here, Little Edie?" lol.) I can understand anyone that is expecting *just* a musicalization of the film, but I really like what Act I attempts to do - whether one thinks it succeeds or not. |
