I saw a production at Theatre West, here in LA. Admittedly, not a full scale production, but a one night event for the Betty Garrett Musical Theatre Scholarship. Even setting aside the obvious limitations of the production and cast, I was sorely disappointed in the book, which was pedestrian. In contrast, a few years before, I saw a similar one-night staging of ONE TOUCH OF VENUS, which while even older than REDHEAD, had the entire audience laughing. Sure, there was plenty of corn, but it was corn that worked in context. REDHEAD just plodded along. Maybe only an actress with the herculean powers of Verdon could carry it, but it seemed like a mighty big rock to me.
