Follies doesn't have a plot. Hair doesn't have a plot. Company doesn't. Pippin doesn't really either.
Not having a story, in that sense, does not matter to me - it's not a good or bad thing to have, depending on how it is used. The Wild Party does mostly definitely tell a story.
I think the difference in how LaChiusa and Wolfe wrote their WP vs Lippa is a masterclass in what TO do in writing a "plot-less" musical of a poetic literary work. The show had me on the edge of my seat about what was "next" always and with the characters and emotions and how they were expressed in the score. And I revisit the show often. Everything you said about it was not true for me watching it, or listening to it. |
