And of course "trunk songs" get repurposed all the time, even if it's only one or a few in any given show. Sondheim is on record saying that if he knew that "You'll Never Get Away From Me" (aka "I'm In Pursuit of Happiness") had been one of Styne's trunk songs, he never would have written lyrics for it.
Of course, Sondheim himself took "The Flag Song," cut from Assassins, and turned it into "It's In Your Hands Now" for Road Show. (Though a bit of the tune still exists in "Another National Anthem" as well.) |
