A woman stuck in an unsatisfying and toxic marriage buries her misery in addiction and a fake mask of happiness, until she falls in love with someone who reminds her of her humanity, allowing her to live once again, but not before her new lover is tragically killed by her jealous husband.
That's a story right there. And it's told in the most Broadway way possible, complete with a major love duet and a finale that states the message of the play clearly. And that journey is reflected in some way by all of the other characters, who have numerous subplots between them, all of which are in service of the central narrative. It's classic musical theater. |
