But the Broadway production was relentlessly ugly and unceasingly aggressive. It took the fun out of orgies to paraphrase Ben Brantley. There was no variation in tempo or intensity. All was grotesque and nightmarish. If there had been an intermission I would have fled. I think the score is very fine. That is why I’d love to see someone else tackle this complex material.
