There's a television version of "One Touch of Venus" from the 1950s, cut but reasonably well-represented, recently viewable on Amazon Prime, starring Janet Blair and Russell Nype. Nype is a bit too nerdy and not sexy enough for his role, though he sings well. Janet Blair, on the other hand, is beautiful, very believable as Venus and has a really lovely voice, a very under-rated performer now, though she got a lot of musical work in her time although she didn't reach the cinematic heights of some less talented performers. Try to see if "the TV "Lady in the Dark" with Ann Sothern (which was released by the same DVD company) becomes available, because that one is really good, too, with Ms. Sothern fantastic as Liza Elliott.
"Redhead" just strikes me as a delightful, mostly up-tempo lively score. Not many murder mysteries have been made into musicals, and this was one of the first. It's something that have I played more often than some bigger name shows because it puts me in a good mood. |
