"Will there ever be another Essie besides Gwen Verdon?"
I doubt there will be another successful one for now, but shortly after the Broadway "Redhead," the show was presented in Mexico under the title "La Pelirroja," with "Redhead" in parentheses directly underneath.
The stars were Virma Gonzalez and Armando Calvo; Armando must have been the better known of the two, as he got first billing. The choreography was not by Bob Fosse but by another American, Kevin Carlisle.
Just as RCA had made the Broadway cast recording, RCA issued an album of "La Pelirroja," and it was recently released on CD. Placido Domingo can be heard in the "Two Faces in the Dark" number (he can also be heard in "With a Little Bit of Luck" on the Mexican "My Fair Lady" recording).
Virma Gonzalez also starred in the Mexican production of "Carnival," under the title "Lili." Virma belts the role the way Liza must have when she did it.
And Virma was Agnes Gooch to Silvia Pinal's "Mame," which also got recorded. |
