What was it like when Madeline Kahn was fired from Twentieth Century?

Did they take her name off the marquee immediately? Were the Playbills pulled? Was it announced immediately or was Kaye on as an understudy and then they announced they gave her the role full time? This remains to me one of the most shocking firings in Broadway history.
