Dr. Crippen is the Act I closer, and it's definitely a dark turn, as Savory uses the song (i.e. the story of Crippen murdering Elmore) to accuse Rodney of murdering Gloria. Believe me, it fits the moment in the show quite appropriately.
A similar kind of thing happens in the last section of "Catch Hatch" which starts off as a tour-de-force choral "romp" of sorts, but turns very dark near the end (the music to me almost seems to be more of the German Weill than the American one).
I think Weill and his collaborators were always looking for ways to juxtapose moods and styles (Street Scene is a formidable example of that), and though Venus skews mostly comedic/romantic, it definitely has its dark side too. |
