I used to date a woman who had a thing for Terrence Mann and it's her fandom that took me to the worst play and worst musical I ever saw on Broadway: GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER and THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL. MURDER had absolutely nothing going for it except Sondheim's name on the marquee and an interesting cast who had done, and would do, much better shows. But all I remember about it was something about voicemail messages and some odd staging with various tableaux scattered around the playing area. PIMPERNEL had some nice tunes, but ultimately they started to sound alike and for such a robust story, the production seemed absolutely swallowed up in the Minskoff. "Only Love" is a gorgeous song, but the version Linda Eder recorded for one of her albums is much better than what was used in the show.

The single worst production I ever saw wasn't on Broadway, it was the touring version of THE BODYGUARD. Deborah Cox was playing the Whitney Houston role and her voice sounded very tired. The script and production were laughable and had ridiculously melodramatic scenes with the stalker. Poor Judson Mills was stuck in one of the worst roles ever written for a musical. The staging consisted of sliding panels to break up the space. Perhaps they spent all the money on song royalties. It was a limp rag of a show, just a total mess.
