... to me, the April 14 2002 firing of Henry Goodman from THE PRODUCERS was more shocking. Goodman was a terrific Nathan Detroit in the NT Guys and Dolls - as well as playing Roy Cohn brilliantly in ANGELS IN AMERICA for the NT. A great actor, a great comic actor - but very different from Nathan Lane. He was supposed to have 8 weeks to work into the show, with a press night in May 2002. He was fired less than a month after he first went into the show, when he received a phone call from his agent. My understanding from friend aand colleagues in NY and London, at the time, was that when Mr Goodman was offered the role, he was clear that he couldn't replicate what LAne had done, but was sure he could make Max Bialystock his own, and land just as well. I inadvertently saw Mr Goodman's penultimate performance as Max.

I was a fan of Mr Goodman's work in London - and his performance as Max was dispiriting indeed. It was also 100% apparent that he was being made to attempt to replicate Lane's performance - something that was never possible. Embarrassing for Goodman? Yes. Stupid of the producers of The Producers to have hired him? Most likely. The silver lining? Goodman had 8 months remaining in his contract, which the producers of The Producers had to buy out at $15,000 a week. They deserved it.
