I remember being very surprised at the time this occurred. Kahn was a big name with top billing. After she left, John Cullum received top billing followed by Coca, and then Kaye. Kaye performed beautifully on the Toiny Awards that year, with Kahn in the audience.

I also recall that this was discussed in Becoming the Music (an excellent biography, by the way). One night early in the run, Kahn gave a spectacular performance which thrilled Prince. However, she went on to say, "You don't expect me to do that every night," to which Prince replied that he did. Bottom line, she did not perform consistently, I and I think Kahn was relieved to be released from her contract, as the show was very demanding of her talents.
