| I believe Kristin Chenoweth also missed quite a few performances of the revival so perhaps it may be that Lily Garland is just not a role that can be sung eight times a week by any but the most iron lunged singer. I know that Kaye continued to play the role for many years, so it seems that she may be among the few capable of doing this. Have any other actresses even attempted a longish run in the role? If it's true that Kahn encouraged Coleman to make the role harder to sing, I feel like that's on Coleman and, ultimately, Prince. Neither were at their first rodeo and they should have had this consideration in mind from the start when it was decided to give the show an operetta score. Coleman should have responded to Kahn that doing so would be wonderful, but that she would be responsible for sustaining the performance and that he didn't think it was possible. Perhaps he could have given her a more singable role with optional flourishes that she could do if and when she felt up to it. |
