Ok, first off... any musical that wins Best Musical wins "by default given the other nominees."
I know what you mean is that it doesn't deserve to be in the ranks of all time Best Musicals on Broadway winners... but A) look at half the shows with that distinction, or even 1/8th... you're telling me no BM winner is less deserving than TWP would have been? Obviously I think it's a masterwork and deserves the distinction regardless of the competition or non-competition of its particular season.
But the real reason it should have won was because it *was* without a doubt the *best* new musical of that season. Many would say Aida was. Hell, I'd have given it to Marie Christine over Aida.
And yes, I'd have loved for Toni and Eartha to have won that year, and LaChiusa should have walked away with the Best Score win... not just for writing the best score that year, but also for writing 2 scores worthy of Tony nomination - 2 of th 4 nominees. That's amazing. But how a show can not be even nominated for Best Musical (when The Dead AND Swing both secured nominations), but WIN Best Score... it doesn't make sense. (And yes, the correction is that Aida should have been a BM nominee -- but maybe Swing was amazing?). |
