It is all of that and so much more. In telling the story of Queenie it also tells the different stories of all the party-goers, and somehow their stories all beautifully paint one story. The show is very good at using every word and person, every arc, every song, to weave a tapestry of lost people desperate to be seen by other and themselves even more, desperate to take their masks off, and hiding collectively in this party, together but alone. Queenie represents them and they represent her. And as we get to see Queenie's story unfold, we get it told to us in creative ways by the people in her life who are actually telling their own stories, which all work to illuminate the theme and motifs and truths of the Queenie story but also fully stand on their own with depth and flavor all their own.
But it's not just about them, it's about the society at the time, the era, and now too... and being human. Isn't life just a "Wild Party"...
God it's so good. |
