| The reason that the idea of Sally being untalented is so pervasive is that Cliff actually says this to her in the show, at least in the Mendes revivals. When Cliff is making plans to leave Berlin and take Sally back with him to Pennsylvania, she is resistant and claims that she has to think about her career. He says something to the effect of that she never got a job without fucking somebody. Now Cliff is upset, but I've always wondered if this is a "in vino veritas" moment where he's finally saying something that he's thought all along. He certainly doesn't give any thought to consulting her about the move or what she possibly might do in his rural Pennsylvania hometown. I have this idea that, if Sally really were a star or had potential to be one, he would have taken her career a little more seriously. Perhaps he would have suggested decamping to London or Paris or New York, or even Hollywood to make it more attractive and exciting for her. And, frankly, to raise the possibility that her career could help support them while he gets established writing or teaching or whatever in the new place. As a side note, I've always had this sneaking suspicion that Sally isn't really English and that she too might be an American fleeing a small town existence and the whole "English" thing might be an affectation that is part of the "Sally Bowles" character that she has created as part of this fabulous life in Berlin. Her "Englishness" might therefore not fly anywhere else, but Berlin (and certainly not London) and so Sally is forced to either stay in Berlin or to completely come clean with Cliff about who she really is. And, I'm not sure that the Sally we see by the time that Cliff arrives in Berlin could withstand being completely torn down in that way. The real person, whomever she was, may not even exist anymore. |
