| Seeing a preview of "Dance A Little Closer" (nicknamed "Close a Little Faster") made me want to avoid the theater for a while. The score sounded like it had some nice numbers in it, but... Len Cariou sounded like he had nodes from too much "Sweeney Todd"-- almost approaching Harvey Fierstein hoarseness, Liz Robertson (like the 8th Mrs. Alan Jay Lerner and who had apparently gotten fine reviews in London for a revival of "My Fair Lady") had like zero stage presence, the show was so bad it made George Rose look bad (!); plus, the show was set on the dawn of WW III, which made it even more depressing. There was a nice number with 2 gay ice skaters in a small ice rink. I felt similarly disillusioned for a while after seeing "A Doll's Life". Considering the teams that put these two shows together had such illustrious names, the shows just left you feeling bad on the way out and for weeks afterwards remembering and trying to figure out what went wrong. | |
