I end up buying a lot of theatre DVDs and watching plays and musicals online, because stuff doesn’t always get out here or, if they do, they take literally years. Then there’s the historian in me, who goes digging up anything theatre-related from bygone years that aired on PBS or the BBC or whatever, and buying those DVDS. (Why, yes, those are damn near all the Broadway Theatre Archives. Ya gotta issued with that?)
So I was excited by the prospect of these subscription services...until I realized I owned nearly 90% of their offerings, and the remaining 10% just didn’t interest me.
My Chanukah present from the thoughtful spouse was National Theatre At Home, because I never managed to catch all of those, due to limited initial screenings and/or cost, etc. I think of their titles for the first two months, I saw maybe 35-40%. So that’s enough to make that a lovely and valued present. Digital theatre has some things I never saw, like the Jonathan Pryce KING LEAR. Maybe I’ll ask for that for our anniversary...
