Yes, Weillophiles R Us! My gawd, if you just look at the amazing range of the six shows he did in the 1940s—LADY IN THE DARK, ONE TOUCH OF VENUS, FIREBRAND OF FLORENCE, STREET SCENE, LOVELIFE, LOST IN THE STARS—it’s staggering. What a tragic, tragic loss to lose him at 50.
I try to remedy this, in that damn novel of mine about the time traveler who saves Gershwin. Because we need a world, even fictional, with a Gershwin and a Weill saved from early death. I’ve been trying to sell this bloody novel for years, and am tired of publishers complaining “there’s too much theatre in this manuscript for a science fiction novel.” Well, yes, that’s kind of my point.
So this is my official warning to all Chatterati: I’m looking long and hard at self-publishing this crazy book this year. I’m not getting any younger, and people in my family have abysmally short lives. So there. Expect loud noises from me later. :)
