In a lifetime of theatre-going I know I will overlook something awful that I've been fortunate enough to forget. But for the moment, here are my worst three:

"The Umbrella," a play that closed out of town in Philadelphia on its way to Broadway in 1962. It starred Geraldine Page, Arthur O'Connell and Anthony Franciosa. The low point of this post-apocalyptic play was Franciosa having sex with a mannequin in the back seat of a taxi cab.

"Prymate," a play with another unfortunately unforgettable sex scene. The spelling of the title should have been a warning.

"Welcome to the Club," the most insistently misogynistic piece of theatre I've ever seen. If there were a category for worst musical theatre number ever, The Mother-in-Law song would have won the trophy hands down.
