I caught the national tour, too, headed by Rock Hudson. One of my favorite numbers is Oscar Jaffee's 11 o'clock number, ''The Legacy.''

Alas, it was cut when I saw the show, and I assume it was too taxing for Rock to tackle.

Still, Judy Kaye, Imogene Coca, that glorious score and that glistening Art Deco train set were wonders to behold.

(After moving to NYC, I was astonished to hear piano-bar fans singing the overture to ''On the 20th Century'' at Eighty Eight's in the Village.)
