I know I've read or heard him speak about casting this role somewhat controversially with an only passable singer because Sally was more talented in her fantasy of herself than in real life - but it's a musical so most audience still expect great singing. Mendes took this to another level, one I think was a bit too far... in Berlin at the time there must have been countless women who could sing well looking for work, Richardson (and most other Mendes Sallys) were really not up to even the probable reality of the singing talent of Sally. In my estimation.
But I don't think Prince would have cast Jill Haworth or even Judi Dench as the female lead of this musical if he wasn't purposefully trying to paint a picture about Sally... he had his pick, for the most part, of the exceptionally talented women of the time -- i'm sure SOME of them could act it *and* blow the roof off the house vocally if he'd wanted someone to do that. |
