Channing was genuinely hilarious, even in her (I'm sure well rehearsed) curtain speech. She's so alive. There's nothing about this performance that is set in amber. This is exactly why the lady was such a star. How sad that she will only be remembered for doing a million performances of HELLO, DOLLY!.
For those that were around then, is this show a good example of the kind of revues that were popular then? It's kind of like a hybrid of standup, a nightclub act, and sketch comedy, almost like a proto-SNL. |
