The only real opportunity Kaye had back then in film was in some Ali MacGraw-Alan King comedy "Just Tell Me What You Want" that came out around the time of "On the 20th Century", but I think her part was mostly cut. Kaye also had the skills to do legit, belting and even some reasonably graciously composed rock roles like Mary Magdalene and Rizzo. She got lots of work in theater. She might have been fine in some romantic comedies, but her calling card, musicals, weren't being made that much at that juncture -- some big ones like "Grease", but nothing like a studio system of cranking them out which ended by the late 50s.
