There was nothing wrong with Judy Kayes performance taking over for Madeline Kahn. She was very different in her performance.

When Judy was hired for the show she was asked by Hal Prince to also be her understudy plus a part in the show. She didn’t want to be an understudy but Prince talked her into it. He had a feeling about Kahn. He was right. She couldn’t handle it. It was a mutual agreement when Judy took over. Judy didn’t call in to check that day and arrived at the theatre at her usual time with the cast at the door with the news. Judy went on to replay the role many years later in a bus and truck company with Frank Gorshin. She met her husband David Green in it.
