I thought the issue was her age. He thought she was too young.

That criticism of Liza being too good for the movie never holds water for me. She's supposed to be good. She's young and hasn't found her place yet but she's already a star at a popular night club. At the end when she tells Michael York "and yes I have delusions about being a serious actress" or what ever it is she say to justify the abortion you get the feeling that she will continue on in her career and maybe sometime "make it."

Plus I have no proof for this but I think the movie having an American Sally who is on the rise as opposed to a British Sally on stage who is in decline mirrors what is happening in history at that time and is a bit of symbolism for America bouncing back from the depression. That is how I like to think of the film.
