More than any other "award" entity. the Golden Globes are the decisions of a relatively small group of individuals who are not particularly critics, not particularly journalists and quite particularly in the hands of brilliant P.R. minds who have elevated their status via a big party-type awards show. They are very susceptible to being wined and dined (unlike the Oscars, who have strict rules forbidding this) and they have, over the years, made some very odd choices. It's important to keep in mind that it is the studios who choose whom they push to be nominated (and sometimes that push is built into an actor's contract) so you rarely see a nomination for anyone outside the mainstream or from a company that didn't heavily lobby for their favorites. Studios back them because it gives their films some momentum leading into the Oscar nominations. I find them the least legit of awards, even though they've been around forever. That being said, the organization does some solid philanthropic work, supporting a good many film festivals and preservation efforts.
