It's much more about capitalizing on the fandom of Ben Platt and the popularity of the stage musical *as soon as possible*... Ben is only getting older, and it'll have been well over a year since DEH stopped running on stage anywhere. Presumably it'll be back on stage in NYC or on tour if theater returns by next september... but maybe they don't want to play games with the release.
It also may have more to do with what else has already been announced for release.
Also, I think Jan and Feb are much worse months for releases of movies looking for awards or to have blockbuster potential.
I think for a movie like this, money-wise they are going to depend on home streaming rentals more that cinema... and that doesn't have a season, and I think potentially it's better for this film to be a hot topic the first month or two that high school is back in session, since that's the word of mouth that will set it on fire or not. |
