Ms. Omooba played Nettie in a concert production of The Color Purple at Cadogan Hall in London a couple of years before she was cast in the revival at Curve. Her suggestion that she didn't understand the nature of the relationship between Celie and Shug is, to be kind, a lot less than completely credible.
She is a phenomenally talented young woman - if you saw the revival of Ragtime at the Charing Cross Theatre a few years ago you'll remember the astonishing impression she made as Sarah's Friend in the Act One finale - but talent is not always accompanied by grace or intelligence or kindness or empathy, and the way all of this came to light suggests she brought her (toxic) beliefs into several workplaces in ways that made her colleagues uncomfortable.
Her father is a preacher, and apparently a real piece of work; it's unfortunate that she hasn't managed (or, perhaps, attempted) to transcend her upbringing, and I'm sure growing up in that environment damaged her, and this will probably (justifiably) cost her what might have been a very promising career in theatre. |
