In that instance, someone apparently realized this wasn't right, and Jack Soo was moved up from supporting character to lead Sammy Fong in the film version of "Flower Drum Song" a few years later.
Regarding "Redhead", perhaps people thought besides Verdon and 2 other of its actors being honored for their work, and Fosse for the choreography, among other things, that the show was kind of original in it being a musical murder mystery -- not many of those had been done by that time (and not very many since). Voters might have thought it was a novelty as well. I like the scores of both "Redhead" and "Flower Drum Song". |
