| If there is a chance that this would work and be safe then surely it’s worth at least investigating? As for the comparison to gas chambers I would say that we are often in locations where chemicals are being sprayed, there is a whole industry around smells for example to aid the sale of popcorn or other products. I think a lot for the reaction here is born of hatred of ALW, I think he is just desperate to save the performing arts industry which is dying. In case you didn’t notice. If Sondheim had suggested this you would all be saying “Great idea Steve, you see he cares about saving theaters” | |

| But Sondheim didn't say it, did he? Nor, I suspect, would he. And Webber did say it, because of course he would. Perhaps people's judgment of Webber is based on more than just his music? Perhaps we aren't as basic as you seem to think? |

| You begin your post with an "if" and in this case that really becomes the end of it. I don't know if it works or not (lots of draconian measures would work, whether this one actually does or not, but that does not mean they can be justified) but we know that this chemical is not safe and we also know that its safety in general has been investigated, which is not what he is asking for. He is saying use it. Also re Sondheim, these are both old men who could lose enough of their rationality to propose something like this. (It does not appear that Sondheim has, but if he said this, that would be the presumption and we would still not abide the suggestion. The only difference between our reaction would be one of sorrow, because unlike ALW the proposal would not be consistent with a long history of immoral politics.) | |

| I, too, think the gas chamber analogy is as bit overwrought—I imagine what's being proposed is more akin to the greenhouse at the NY Botanical Gardens where they spray the mist periodically. However: If Sondheim had suggested this you would all be saying “Great idea Steve, you see he cares about saving theaters” Bollocks. I'm not going to take medical advice from any composer, no matter how much I like his output. And last time I checked, Sondheim's epidemiological qualifications were no greater than ALWs. |

| If Sondheim had suggested this you would all be saying “Great idea Steve, you see he cares about saving theaters” 1) I doubt he would have suggested it. Also, shouldn't these kind of things be left up to the medical professionals, not theatre composers/entrepreneurs? Please. 2) If he did suggest it, I'd feel the same way I do now. And I would be upset at Sondheim for suggesting it. 3) Are you really going to get into a debate about which of the 2 composers we "like" better, in the face of life and death decisions about the pandemic? Come on. |

| With you on all of this including being Jewish - as I am myself. I suppose for me, horrible idea of chemicals in a closed room not-withstanding, the issue is the guise of "needing to save the arts, and theatre and so on," (of course) but in reality, isn't it all so that ALW, a landowner still i believe to some degree is bound to mortgages that may have the good fortune of a moratorium for the moment (though who knows) but will most certainly come due, and that will be in the many many millions. The options end up without producer rents and patron income being depleting one's own savings (which never are endless, even if it is in the billion dollar range), declaring bankruptcy for the company, losing everything, or selling off everything at very reduced prices, losing maybe even more than he has to leverage. Granted, like Bernie Madoff, there is always a nice little stash somewhere, but who even knows? Either way, with ALW it doesn't ever feel, no matter how hard he tries, about saving the art - . I would gander a guess that in the case of Sondheim, whatever the idea, at least it would be rooted in that. | |
