| In honor of Black History Month, Flushing Town Hall in Queens, NY, presents its Black History Trilogy, a three-part series of outstanding Broadway performers showcasing the music and speeches of influential African-Americans. The first performance is tonight (FRIDAY, FEB. 5) with Alton Fitzgerald White in “John Lewis: A Pioneer for Justice.” White, who appeared over 4,000 times as Mufasa in the stage production of “The Lion King,” will bring to life the legacy of American politician and civil rights leader John Lewis, who passed away last summer and coined the phrase “good trouble” in one of his most resilient speeches. Following his reading of the speech, White will discuss why Lewis’ words and mission are still relevant today and participate in a Q&A with the virtual audience. On THURSDAY, FEB. 18, Tony winner and vocalist Lillias White performs “Divine Sass: A Tribute to the Music, Life, and Legacy of Sarah Vaughan,” a show White wrote and conceived. White–beloved for her Broadway performances in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” and “The Life”–will highlight the music and struggles of legendary jazz artist Sarah “Sassy” Vaughan, a pivotal figure in the formation of bebop who has influenced generations of singers with her unique style of expression and melodic phrasing. Vaughan helped desegregate American airwaves and set the stage for the civil rights activism of the 1960s and 1970s. On FRIDAY, FEB. 26, André De Shields stars in “Frederick Douglass: Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory,” exploring the life and achievements of a man who began his life as a slave and became an abolitionist leader as well as an orator and writer on social justice. The play tells a story about brutality and deliverance that is as filled with hope and achievement as it is darkness and anger. De Shields won the Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards for “Hadestown” in 2019. Earlier Broadway credits include “The Wiz,” “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “The Full Monty.” He is a member of the Theater Hall of Fame and recipient of an AUDELCO for Lifetime Achievement. All shows are at 7:00 PM. For viewing links and more information: flushingtownhall.org/black-history-trilogy |
