| I wish I could have loved both - or either. Putting It Together was a sprawling mess (way too much concept that didn't work, and frankly way too much "drive a person crazy" Durang for anyone to have to sit through - could that be considered torture, for god's sake?), despite the music. And while the FILM of Victor/Victoria is fantastic, well-constructed, well-directed, and actually funny, I feel the stage show really misses the mark on all of that - and with horrid songs like "Paris Makes Me Horny," it's also a truly disappointing patchwork of a score (aside from most of the pre-existing film songs, of course). Also, it seems to me that V/V really depended on Andrews as its one asset (I don't think it's any sort of mistake that she got the only Tony nomination - nothing was "egregiously overlooked" IMO) - I don't know how sales were during the month Liza filled in (or if Liza was actually solid in the role), but it seems to me that Andrews leaving and Welch replacing her essentially killed the show's run. But I'm glad you saw something in those shows that I didn't. |
