Joe Allen in THE BOYS IN THE BAND

After I saw the recent movie version of the Ryan Murphy production of THE BOYS IN THE BAND, I commented in more than one forum that I was sorry one of the lines had been changed to reference Joe Allen (the restaurant) rather than a more high-toned, pretentious restaurant (I think maybe it's Lutece or some place like that in the original script), because the change didn't work in terms of the meaning of the line. I still feel that way, BUT now I guess it doesn't bother me as much, because I think it's sweet that Mr. Allen and the restaurant have been honored in that way :-)

I agree about both. The challenge was to find a place that is resonant now but that existed then. Ironically the resonant choice also conveyed the wrong connotation.

Agreed, but as I've said before, there are at least a few high-toned, extremely expensive, very well known Manhattan restaurants existing today that also existed in 1969. They might have changed it to 21 or La Grenouille, to cite only two examples.

I hope Joe Allen’s reopens when this pandemic finally ends.

The restaurant is not called “Joe Allen’s.” It’s just “Joe Allen.”

Agree! I have many memories in my limited years of going to New York, including almost being knocked over by Alan Bates at Joe Allen and having dinner with (well, next to) Stephen Sondheim at Orso.

Many good drinks and dinners (and never an apostrophe s ať either place!)

Right, no need for apostrophes. Beauty in simplicity :-)

Nathan Lane, Chita Rivera, Kelli O'Hara, and others reminisce about Joe Allen in The Times.

And don't forget Orso's

He started it with his daughter.

Both restaurants (and the unsigned Bar Centrale upstairs) were always cheerful, welcoming places. Some of the front of house staff I'd seen there for over twenty years of Broadway trips. How did he do that? That's not easy.
