“Sensations” — score by Wally Harper
Posted by: kieran 12:01 am EST 02/10/21

Harper of course is best known these days for his work with Barbara Cook but I was reading on Facebook today about his score for the musical “Sensations” which ran for two weeks in 1970 at Theater Four. Mel Gussow wrote “Wally Harper has written one of the best rock show scores I have ever heard—complex, richly textured, even hummable— a perfect answer to anyone who thinks rock is not melodic. Besides those ballads there are three terrific protest songs—and much more.” Anyone here aware of this score?

I saw Sensations twice. I loved it. Mainly for the score, some of which was gorgeous but really for the exquisite orchestrations by Bill Brohn. He used a double string quartet—one acoustic and one electronic, but I may be misremembering that. What I am not misremembering is that the orchestrations were indeed gorgeous. After I saw it, I always said if I ever were lucky enough to have a show produced, Bill would orchestrate it. I was and he did, after which we became great friends. He was a devoted friend and kind and generous. I still miss him.

I heard a cabaret singer do the title song once and it was quite lovely. I wouldn't call it rock..at least not the one song I heard, a ballad...it did have some lyrics very much of the time.."my soul is one with rain"

“Lonely Children” is another lovely song from the show.
