I've been wondering the same thing. Does this new version mean no one can do SUGAR again? Or is it like the Maury Yeston PHANTOM, limited in where it can play? SUGAR was still having regional productions well into this century..Brent Barrett and Jason Graee starred in one in San Jose. While it may not be Styne and Merrill's finest hour, there are some very catchy tunes like Hey Why Not, Sun on My Face, When You Meet a Man in Chicago and the title tune. I can't imagine Shaiman will write anything better. Almost all of his scores sound like HAIRSPRAY...he can't stop the beat... CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was a notable exception and an underrated show I thought.

Here's video of ''Sugar'' from Sacramento's Music Circus, starring Brent Barrett, Jason Graae, Elizabeth Stanley, Lenny Wolpe & Alix Korey.

I saw the original Broadway production back in 1974. I loved it, but I was only 14 at the time. Also loved the OBC.

Ten years later, I had moved to LA and the show opened at the Music Ctr. with Morse repeating his Bway role.

Unfortunately, someone had the brilliant idea of casting Joe Namath in the role Tony Roberts played.

The Times' Dan Sullivan gave Namath such a shallacking I avoided it.

Other than being rather good in "Victor/Victoria" on Broadway, I really never quite understood how Tony Roberts got so much work; to me, he never seemed a particularly outstanding a performer. Mostly he was serviceable. Joe Namath back then at least had looks and his fame as an athlete. I think had been cast as Joe Hardy in "Damn Yankees" which perhaps with some cutting of material, as an athlete he could have gotten by to some extent. As Joe in "Sugar", though, that's pretty questionable casting.

I'm not sure if you're saying you think he had been cast, or wondering had he been cast ... but Namath did play Joe Hardy, didn't he?

He played it at Jones Beach and if I recollect, played two seasons.

Not on Broadway, but when he played it at Claridge in AC, the NY Times was a lot nicer on Namath than the LA Times was.

I'm obviously a bigger fan than you.

I saw him on Broadway in ABSURD PERSON SINGULAR, THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG and THE TALE OF THE ALLERGIST'S WIFE, aside from SUGAR.

I thought he was excellent in all 4 shows.

Taking stock of Tony in 'How Now, Dow Jones'

I've never seen ''How Now, Dow Jones,'' but I've always enjoyed this catchy number with Tony Roberts, who got a Tony nomination.

It's ''Step to the Rear'' from Elmer Bernstein and Carolyn Leigh's Tony-nominated score. (Does anyone ever do this show anymore?)

I saw it at the Fringe in 2009 at the Minetta Lane. It had that catchy tune and some funny lines from Max Schulman.

I have never even heard of it being done otherwise.

The problem with the score from Catch Me If You Can is that each song goes on, and on, and on.............

A revival of sugar. I caught the tour about ten years ago. Very marginal songs. A new take on the material is needed.
