I've been wondering the same thing. Does this new version mean no one can do SUGAR again? Or is it like the Maury Yeston PHANTOM, limited in where it can play? SUGAR was still having regional productions well into this century..Brent Barrett and Jason Graee starred in one in San Jose. While it may not be Styne and Merrill's finest hour, there are some very catchy tunes like Hey Why Not, Sun on My Face, When You Meet a Man in Chicago and the title tune. I can't imagine Shaiman will write anything better. Almost all of his scores sound like HAIRSPRAY...he can't stop the beat... CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was a notable exception and an underrated show I thought.
