VICTOR/VICTORIA was probably doomed from the start, simply because Blake Edwards insisted on complete control, acting as producer, director, and writer. He should have stepped aside in all capacities except writer and allowed people with actual experience putting together musicals to build the stage adaptation from the ground up.

Honestly, Andrews too should have relinquished her role to a performer (or even two performers splitting the role) more capable of the stamina necessary to carry a Broadway show on her shoulders. If she'd wanted to return to Broadway at that point in her life, she'd have been an excelled Anna in THE KING AND I (a role she'd already recorded) or Desiree in A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC or she could have had PUTTING IT TOGETHER transfer or she might have gotten some musical theatre writers to write something brand new just for her that could have been tailored to her limitations at the time.

I saw Andrews in VICTOR/VICTORIA from standing room and, while it was thrilling to see her live and in person, I would gladly have given up that experience in exchange for Andrews not taking on a role that ended up giving her nodes that cost her her voice.

I remember hearing speculation that season that both VICTOR/VICTORIA and the then-current revival of THE KING AND I would have been improved had Andrews and Donna Murphy exchanged roles. For those who weren't around then, though Murphy later won a Tony for her performance as Anna, that performance was fairly controversial at the time.
