It really begs the question why did she accept the role in the first place? Clearly, she's being disingenuous about not understanding the nature of the Celie/Shug relationship. So what lead her to audition for the role and then accept it when offered? I wonder if she thought it would be possible to play the role WITHOUT playing (or emphasizing) the sexual nature of it...perhaps only hinting at it as the film does. But that is conversation that she should have had with the director BEFORE accepting the role, which would have allowed the creative staff to move forward with another actress from the start.

I wonder if she was really so naive as to think she might have a career in musical theatre while espousing the views that she does. And I wonder what her thought process was as she first starting working in the musical theatre space and came to realize that LGBT people are not only everywhere in every aspect of the business, most of them are out and proud about it and wouldn't give a thought to hiding any aspect of who they are. And realizing that most of them probably wouldn't care to work with someone espousing her beliefs.

After this, the only career path I see for her as an actress is if she might reach out to Kirk Cameron and go to work with him in his conservative Christian movies. Although, to be honest, it wouldn't surprise me if the people that are such fans of those films wouldn't care to see a black woman featured in them, no matter her beliefs.
