I think it might have been great if someone had attempted to write such a musical back in the '50s or early '60s, when the general style of Broadway music would have been conducive to the story. But anyone who tried to write it now would either have to try to do so in traditional, golden-age Broadway style, which for many reasons I very much doubt anyone would do, or they would write it with a more modern sound, which would be inappropriate for the story.
