| I was sharing the film of 'Godspell' with my 9yo son, who really enjoyed it. And of course it's so cool how they are the only occupants of an empty city and to wonder how they filmed it, and to see favorite places. So then I was pondering 'The Wiz' and 'Hair', which we haven't watched together yet. It's been a while for me for the other two. Any observations to share about these films and their depictions of the city? I think we need to have an at-home film festival and watch all three, but will have to wait since my son's not quite ready for 'Hair'. |

| I'd like to see Godspell. Hair has some good things in it. Annie Golden is great. The Wiz is a terrible movie. Sweet Charity has NYC musical numbers. it's a bad movie but some of the numbers are great. For a less idealized NYC see Midnight Cowboy, without your 9 year old. |

| At least not in my opinion. The Wiz is rough but also the reimagining of it as an actual black experience in NYC is really cool, and a lot of the sets and visuals that come from it are amazing. I wish a different director had taken it on. But it's also a fascinating take on/look at NYC at the time. There's a ton wrong with how it works as a movie and of course how it adapted the musical (and some good too), but I was super into it as a kid and it's just a bizarre fun movie with some great songs, so why not show it to your kid. And Sweet Charity I think is extraordinary. Some of the best musical sequences put on film. It doesn't entire work as a movie, but the extremes Fosse went to are worth it when they work, I think. And also... I'm not sure it entirely works as a stage musical either, I think for the way each are done (the movie and the stage show), they work almost as well as they ever could. |

| Hmm well I have definitely seen Midnight Cowboy. I was thinking about musicals in particular. Agree with you about Hair. I can't get through Sweet Charity but I had forgotten it was filmed in NYC. | |

| I'm pretty sure at least parts (or moments) of the following were filmed in NYC: Guys & Dolls, On the Town, How to Succeed, Newsies, Rent, Little Shop of Horrors. And, of course, the best of all: West Side Story. |

| I've read that ''Newsies'' (1992) was shot on the newly rebuilt New York Street sets at Universal Studios Hollywood. | |

| Aleck, I'm pretty sure that, of your list, the only movies filmed even partially in NYC were ON THE TOWN and HOW TO SUCCEED. | |

| IMDB reports that many of the scenes in Rent were filmed in NYC. If you have information that contradicts that claim, you should contact IMDB and set them straight. | |

| Sorry, I remember reading that most or all of RENT was going to be filmed in/on Treasure Island, off of San Francisco. (See article linked to below.) I do believe that most of it, or some of it, was filmed there, including the opening/title song sequence. But now that I think of it, and just going from memory, I think they must have wound up filming at least some of it in New York -- for example, there's a scene on the subway ("Santa Fe"), and then in "I'll Cover You" the characters seem to be singing while walking actual NYC streets. | |

| Gee, I kind of remember opening scenes, at least, of West Side Story of guys dancing in the streets. I thought that those scenes were shot in the empty streets where Lincoln Center is now. But it's been a long time since I saw that movie. I'll have to take another look. Sorry if I got fooled by a backlot set. | |

| Sorry, I didn't mean to include WEST SIDE STORY as part of the list. Yes, the entire prologue and most of the "Jet Song" were famously filmed in NYC. One location was on the west side in the area of what is now Lincoln Center, and the playground that featured prominently in the opening sequences was apparently located on the east side, I think between 109th and 100th streets. | |

| The prologue of WEST SIDE STORY was filmed in NYC, on W. 68th Street, on the streets that later made way for Lincoln Center and in a park on 110th Street (I believe East 110th Street). At one point The Jets turn a corner and end up in a Hollywood studio replica of an alley, where the solo first verse of The Jet Song is performed. I guess this was done to assure Russ Tamblyn's safety when he jumped up on the jungle gym. When Riff's solo section of the song is done and he departs, The Jets miraculously turn back onto the streets of NY and finish the song. The rest of the movie was shot in Hollywood, but most of its first 20 minutes are indeed shot in NYC. | |

| I've always heard that. But the north side of Juilliard is on 66th Street. What part of Lincoln Center is on 68th? | |
