| The prologue of WEST SIDE STORY was filmed in NYC, on W. 68th Street, on the streets that later made way for Lincoln Center and in a park on 110th Street (I believe East 110th Street). At one point The Jets turn a corner and end up in a Hollywood studio replica of an alley, where the solo first verse of The Jet Song is performed. I guess this was done to assure Russ Tamblyn's safety when he jumped up on the jungle gym. When Riff's solo section of the song is done and he departs, The Jets miraculously turn back onto the streets of NY and finish the song. The rest of the movie was shot in Hollywood, but most of its first 20 minutes are indeed shot in NYC. |
