I wouldn't blame her if she did throw a lamp for that... that's a big moment of exposure for a stage actor to a national audience, especially in the context of being 1 of 4 actors in a category that is one of the main awards people take note of in the Tonys show. And it was her first nomination. It's a big deal and it sucks the director and/or camera operator and/or producer screwed that up... it's their job and it shouldn't be hard to be in the right place (Patti's row) and know what the nominee you're assigned to cover looks like. I've worked on awards shows before, I don't think a screw up like this is very common. It's not a BIG deal, and I hope Patti (or I were it me) would laugh it off, but it does mightily suck too.

But also let's not equate what she was reacting to in her Sunset dressing room that day with this Tonys mistake. LuPone may not be the softest actor in the biz but she isn't know for fits of uncalled for anger and destruction at the drop of anything she doesn't like. I know it was a joke, and it was funny, but also, this is how reputations gets unfairly made and perpetuated.

It did seem to happen sometimes in the 70s at the Oscars. I like to watch the old Oscar presentations. For Ronee Blakely in Nashville they showed Susan Sarandon. For Jane Fonda once they showed Francis Ford Coppola! So it wasn't even a lookalike.

I think there are more cases. Sometimes it was because people switched seats I've read.

It's clear this was an isolated conspiracy against LuPone. ;)
