At least not in my opinion. The Wiz is rough but also the reimagining of it as an actual black experience in NYC is really cool, and a lot of the sets and visuals that come from it are amazing. I wish a different director had taken it on. But it's also a fascinating take on/look at NYC at the time. There's a ton wrong with how it works as a movie and of course how it adapted the musical (and some good too), but I was super into it as a kid and it's just a bizarre fun movie with some great songs, so why not show it to your kid.
And Sweet Charity I think is extraordinary. Some of the best musical sequences put on film. It doesn't entire work as a movie, but the extremes Fosse went to are worth it when they work, I think. And also... I'm not sure it entirely works as a stage musical either, I think for the way each are done (the movie and the stage show), they work almost as well as they ever could. |
