"It's a beautiful show with perpetual relevance about shared humanity and valuing our true selves. While the show was not fully appreciated during its abbreviated Broadway run, my hope is that our virtual revival will make it available to many more people." "Directing and producing Amour has been an exciting challenge as we pull together scenic elements, full costumes, props, and a very complicated score - all remotely. It's only fitting for a surrealist show to come together through this surreal process, and I am in awe of and grateful to our actors for their dedication, immense talent, and spirit in going on this journey with us." Fofonoff's Art Lab production company will employ approximately 40 artists and arts professionals during the preparations and rehearsals leading up to Amour's premiere. Over the past year, Art Lab has become a leader in the virtual theater space with projects including Disenchanted! Stay-At-Home Version ; readings of the new musical shAme; the weekly series "The Show Must Go On…Show;" and the monthly series "Art Lab Presents." With music by Michel Legrand and libretto by Didier van Cauwelaert, Amour is adapted from "Le Passe-Muraille" by Marcel Aymé (Les Éditions Gallimar). Amour's English adaptation is by Jeremy Sams. The creative team for Amour's virtual presentation also includes Jennifer Tremblay (costume designer), Mark Governor (music producer), and Sean Mayes (music director). Casting by Alexandre Bleau. Julie DeVore serves as the Production Stage Manager. Amour is set in picturesque Montmartre, in the city of Paris, with soaring music by Michel Legrand. Dusoleil is a nerdy civil servant but also a dreamer who discovers that he can walk through walls, which allows him to give bread and jewels to the deserving bourgeoisie. As he gains confidence to win over the beautiful Isabelle from her unhappy marriage, Dusoleil's magical approach to life makes the world better for his co-workers and other Parisian locals. In a time when we all feel stuck behind walls, Amour will transport you to a world of magical fantasy in a story about love, self-worth, and dreams coming true. Adapted from the 1943 short story Le Passe-Muraille by Marcel Aymé, Amour played 17 performances on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre in 2002. It was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. Since 1965, when he received three Academy Award nominations for his score, adaptation and the song "I Will Wait For You" from The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Michel Legrand has become one of the most important names in contemporary music. He has won three Oscars from a total of sixteen nominations, three Grammy Awards and an Emmy nomination for his score to the television movie Brian's Song. Legrand first came to attention of Americans when, at the age of 22, he arranged and conducted the Columbia recording, "I Love Paris," which became one of the best-selling instrumental records ever released. He received his first Oscar in 1968 for Best Song, "The Windmills of Your Mind" from The Thomas Crown Affair, and his second Oscar for Best Original Dramatic Score for Summer of '42. His third Oscar came in 1984 from Best Original Song Score to Barbra Streisand's movie Yentl called by Time Magazine, "The most romantic, coherent and sophisticated original movie score since Gigi a quarter-century ago." Mr. Legrand collaborated with lyricist Sheldon Harnick for the stage musical A Christmas Carol and with James Lapine and Jeremy Sams for the musical Amour in 2002. Michel Legrand is also a conductor of renown and a virtuoso jazz pianist. A few of the many other performers who have recorded Legrand's compositions are Frank Sinatra, Cleo Laine, Oscar Peterson, Henry Mancini, Tony Bennett and Rosemary Clooney. In 1989 Legrand achieved his longtime goal of directing and co-writing (as well as scoring) his first feature film, Five Days in June. Michel Legrand has three children and lives in Paris. MARCEL AYMÉ (Original Author of Le Passe-Muraille). Born in Joigny in 1902, Marcel Aymé was raised by his grandparents on his mother's side, in Jura. After his service in the military, he moved to Paris, where he tried his hand at many types of work: journalism, labour, peddling… In 1926, his first novel, Brûlebois brought him wide recognition. It was after the success of The Green Mare in 1933 that he was able to dedicate himself entirely to writing. The first collection of the famous Magic Pictures and The Wonderful Farm were published in 1934 and The Man Who Walked Through Walls in 1943. Its irony, caustic humour and vividness combined to make Marcel Aymé a very popular writer. Author of twenty novels, ten short stories, essays, scripts and several plays, he died in Paris in 1967.
